Going out on a Coffee date. What kind of coffee should i get?

May 27, 2010

hahaha silly question, but i met this girl the other day, and we hit it off and i asked her out. She replied sure lets go out in the morning for coffee and we will see where it goes from there. Now i enjoy the smell of coffee so im sure i will enjoy it. There are so many kinds i would feel lost at the starbucks counter. So im wondering what the first time Coffee drinker should get. I would be lost amongst the french words, creams and sugars.

wow, a first time drinker! well, starbucks coffee tends to be very strong, so don’t go for a latte or an espresso. you could get a normal cup of coffee (they usually have a few different blends that they’re brewing). it’s a safe bet for the first time. add some cream & sugar if you want. if you feel like going bolder, i’d recommend a cappuccino. if you want cold coffee, there’s iced coffee (it’s just waht it sounds like) or a frappuccino (blended things that really don’t taste much like coffee at all). let her order first and then go with the flow. make sure you get a good table (there can be fierce competition over tables at some starbucks locations lol–i’m serious). most of all, just relax and have a good time.

Gourmet Coffee Franchise – High Profits and High Competition

May 20, 2010

Gourmet coffee franchises make for a great investment opportunity. However, too much of a good thing can be a negative, especially with market saturation. If you’re contemplating investing in a gourmet coffee franchise then there are some things you have to do first to increase your chances of success. We’ll discuss them in this article.

Gourmet coffee is growing in popularity. In fact, there has been a 76% increase in the consumption of gourmet coffee in the last five years. Starbucks has been a big leader in this area, but they are far from being the only ones. With that has also come a rash of gourmet coffee franchise opportunities.

The profit margins are high, the demand is high, and so naturally the competition is high. There are two favorable circumstances where you can make a gourmet or specialty coffee franchise work for you.

The first circumstance is the best one, but is also the rarest. This involves being the first in a certain area to open a gourmet Coffee franchise where there is adequate demand to support your business. This lets you steal pretty much all of the market share and you don’t face the pressure of competition. If you feel you have a situation like this on your hands then it would be a wise move forward and invest in a gourmet coffee franchise.

The second circumstance occurs much more often – that’s where there is a high demand, but there is also a lot of competition. Don’t think that competition is necessarily a bad thing because it is not. It shows that a gourmet coffee business can work in that area. However, you must take someone else’s market share to become successful.

There’s only one way to do this. You must offer the consumer something extra they can get nowhere else. This could be a better price, more convenience, a relaxing atmosphere, or a certain type of specialization or other innovative idea. Do this and your odds of success will skyrocket. Don’t do this and your odds of surviving in business at all will be very low.

So when it comes to evaluating gourmet coffee franchises first you have to look at your area and calculate what you perceive to be the demand and competition. Then start looking at other coffee franchises that offer competitive advantages in your marketplace. Start a franchise that can compete by offering something better to the consumer.

Check out different business models of these franchises and compare their strengths and weaknesses to understand the differences. At the same time, sometimes you can realize a competitive advantage simply by negotiating a very fair franchise agreement. Also, it will depend on the amount of investment you can make for the franchise as well.

Keep these things in mind when evaluating different gourmet coffee franchises.

What is the best kind of coffee at places like starbucks, caribou, or dunn bros.?

May 10, 2010

I am starting to try coffee but coffee shops have so many different kinds and i was wondering which ones you would reccomend

It depends on you. Here is a little breakdown:

- Standard coffee: usually cheapest per fl. oz. so you’ll get the most bang for you buck. Also called, “brew of the day” or “drip.” Some coffee shops offer different blends, like a light roast for subtle taste or a stronger dark roast. If you want plain old joe, ask for a “drip.”

- Espresso - a condensed 2ish oz. shot of caffeine, the top should be caramel colored, which is the crema. The crema is the tasty part of the shot. However, espresso shots are usually still bitter. You want to add cream/milk/sugar. Comes in single, double, triple, etc.
. Macchiato – espresso with just a hint of milk and foam. Less stronger than plain ol’ espresso but still bitter. It usually doesn’t surpass half a small sized cup.
. Cappuccino – half espresso + milk and half foam. Think of it as a bigger form of a macchiato
. Latte - shots and your choice of milk (non-fat, soy, whole, etc). Thats it, simple right?
. Flavored Latte - same thing as a latte but with the mentioned flavor. So a vanilla latte is just shots, vanilla flavoring (powder or syrup) and milk.

- Blended drinks (fraps): Usually coffee shops offer blended forms of caffeinated drinks. They are usually flavored, but fear not, alot of these do come with caffeine, just as long as its not a fruit/smoothie thing, since fruit doesnt have caffeine.

Also, you can pretty much get your flavored lattes over ice, which is essentially the same thing.. just cold.

- Teas: If coffee isn’t your thing, these shops almost always offer teas. And YES, teas ARE caffeinated. A lot of them, that is. Make sure with your barista by asking.

Try plain old Coffee first, add milk and sugar. If you end up not liking the coffee taste (its kinda acquired), defintely stick to flavored lattes. They taste good and have kick.
